Wondering What to do If My Kindle is Frozen? Here is the Solution

The Kindle is a wonderful device for all those people that love reading. But, like any device, it can sometimes throw tantrums and not work like it's supposed to. The most common question people ask me about the Kindle is that “My Kindle is frozen. What should I do?”. In this post, I will tell you about some common reasons why a Kindle suddenly freezes and stops working. Also, I will share some basic steps to try and fix the issue.

Kindle is Frozen

Why Does a Kindle Freeze?

Below are some common reasons why even a Kindle in proper condition can become frozen all of a sudden.

If Its Battery is Low

The most common reason behind your Kindle freezing is low battery. A low battery can reduce the power supply to the processor and lead to your device freezing.

If Processor is Overworked

If you are using the Kindle’s browser to open several web pages at the same time, it can lead to its processor getting overworked. The Kindle’s processor is not very heavy-duty. Hence, it's easy to overload it.

Memory Issues

The Kindle has limited memory space and if too many web pages are accessed, its limited memory can get full. When that happens, the Kindle gets Frozen.

Firmware that is Outdated

Another reason why you would be saying that my Kindle is frozen is outdated firmware. If the firmware of your Kindle is not regularly updated to its latest version, it may freeze up on you.

How to Fix a Frozen Kindle Issue?

The following steps can be used by you to resolve the frozen Kindle issue. In many cases just using one of these steps helps. In others, you may need to use them all one by one.

Reset the Kindle

The first and most obvious thing to try first would be to reset the Kindle. If you're wondering how to reset a Kindle, then follow these steps.

  • Press down the power button till the screen begins to flash

  • Then, release the power button and the Kindle will restart

This step works most of the time. I am sure it will work for you too.

Updating Firmware

If you suspect that your Kindle is freezing because of its firmware, then try to update it. Before updating the firmware, I would suggest that you reset the Kindle using the above method. Then, go to the Kindle software update page of Amazon to download the updated firmware.

You can use a USB cable to connect your Kindle to your PC. then drag and drop the firmware file on the Kindle. Then, disconnect the Kindle from the PC and go to Menu>Settings>Menu>Update Your Kindle.

Charge the Kindle

If your Kindle is freezing because of a low battery issue, charging it will help. This will help in a situation when the Kindle is so frozen that it will not even reset. In such a case, charge it for several hours, and then while connected to the charger, hold down the power button.

If the screen starts to flash in ten seconds, then leave the button and the device should restart. Then you can check to see if it is working fine or not.

Factory Reset/Hard Reset

If none of the above steps resolves the issue, then the last option is to reset the Kindle to its factory settings. If you do this, you will have to download your books again by connecting your device to your Amazon account.

The process for a factory reset is as follows:

  • Tap on quick actions or Menu

  • Menu>Settings>Device Options or

  • Menu>Reset>Reset Again>Yes

By following these steps, your Kindle will be reset to its factory settings.

Wrapping up

Hopefully, these tips will help you use your Kindle better and troubleshoot some common issues with a Kindle freezing better.
